The 2023 Grand Cherokee is an SUV for those who desire both machismo and elegance. The base model still offers a mainstream package, but the midrange and high-end trims come with luxury features that make it upscale.
The Grand Cherokee has moved up in the world, but it hasn't forgotten its off-roading roots--it's still a Jeep, after all. Three different powertrains are offered: V-6 and V8 engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid system called 4xe. The Grand Cherokee only has space for two rows of seating.
This vehicle is perfect for both suburban family life and off-roading, thanks to its spacious cabin. If you have a larger family, however, you may want to consider the three-row Grand Cherokee L (reviewed separately).
The new Grand Cherokee is powered by a 293-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 or a 357-hp, 5.7 liter Hemi V8 like its predecessor. Jeep also now offers a plug in hybrid 4xe powertrain which pairs a turbocharged 2.0 inline four with an electric traction motor to deliver 375 horsepower and 470 pound feet of torque combined.
The base V-6 has a 14.0-kWh battery pack that powers the hybrid's motor. Those who choose the V-8 or plug-in-hybrid powertrain will have all wheel drive standard, which comes with several different system options like an electronically locking limited=slip differential. The Trailhawk model is made for more difficult terrain and off roading, including features like an adjustable air suspension and disconnecting sway bar to allow greater wheel articulation--both of which give it up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance .
We were pleasantly surprised with the Grand Cherokee's ride quality and engine performance during our test drive. Both the V-6 and V-8 engines had more than enough power, and theGrand Cherokee handled smoothly even at high speeds. Our Summit model with theV-6 engine went from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.4 seconds when we tested it on a track
The V-6–powered Grand Cherokee has average fuel economy for a mid-size SUV at 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway when driven with rear-wheel drive. Having all-wheel drive 1 mpg to each estimate; the V-8 model's estimates are 14 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. The plug-in hybrid 4xe is more fuel efficient, with ratings of 23 mpgecity 24 mph highway.
The 14.0-kWh battery pack gives the Grand Cherokee a average of 26 miles per charge while cruising. Jeep has proudly announced that the 4xe powertrain completed the Rubicon Trail, which is notoriously difficult, entirely in its EV driving mode. Base Laredo models offer the essentials, while upscale Summit and Overland trims add luxuries such as quilted leather upholstery, open-pore wood trim, and high-tech digital displays.
The Grand Cherokee is a two-row SUV, but if you need an extra row for passengers, you can buy the Grand Cherokee L. We haven't put the new model of the Grand Chrokee to the test yet, but we're expecting it to be able to hold more carry-on luggage than its predecessor.
